Sports Central to promotion of national unity and soft image: Prime Minister

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said the spirit of National Unity and brotherhood demonstrated by the participants of the Old Cars Rally from all the four provinces will serve to bring the people of various areas near to each other. Such events, he added, reflect tolerance, respect for each other and sportsmanship. The Prime Minister expressed these views while meeting with the participants of Old Cars Rally at the Prime Minister’s House today. The Old Cars Rally started from Karachi a week ago and concluded in Islamabad yesterday. The Prime Minister appreciated the devotion of the car owners in maintaining the cars and using these for the noble cause of promoting unity among the people of the country. In an atmosphere marked by extremist tendencies, he said, such events portray dynamism and unwavering determination of the Nation not to submit before such evil forces. The Prime Minister said sports and cultural activities are a means to project the soft image of the country in the outside world. The government, he maintained, remains committed to encouraging the sports culture in order to channelise the energies of the youth into healthy engagements. The participants thanked the Prime Minister for his support for the sports activities of the country. They mentioned that the Rally passed through the flood affected areas as well providing them with the opportunity to express their solidarity with the flood affectees. The patronage by the government for various sports events, they said, would help create enabling environment to develop tolerant society. Later the Prime Minister had a look at the old cars which participated in the old car Rally. He also drove one of the old cars inside the Prime Minister’s House. The cars that participated in the Rally included vehicles from 1927 to 1967 models.-UNS
